Audra silently challenged Caleb to argue with her. The longer she spent time with him, the more she realized her feelings were not a passing fancy, but the kind of love seen in Mama and Papa and her married brothers and sisters. Caleb most likely despised her for some of the accusations she’d spit his way in the beginning, and she couldn’t blame him. After all, she’d been convinced he was an outlaw.
“You will not put yourself in danger,” Caleb said.
Each of his words shook her will like Papa swinging an axe over a stack of wood. “I most certainly will. Have you forgotten the sheriff is in this? And the bounty hunter and whoever else is after the reward?”
“I’ll hang before I risk you being dragged into the middle of this.” Not a muscle moved on his face.
“I’m already in the middle. That happened when your brother stopped the stage and I witnessed a murder.” Irritation gave her an edge of courage.
“This is my problem.”
“And you are the most stubborn man I’ve ever met.”
“Arguing won’t solve a thing,” Jed said with a wave of a drumstick. “If there’s anyone close by looking for Caleb, you two will have them down on us in no time.”
Calm down. “I apologize,” Audra said. “I’m a little angry.”
“So am I,” Caleb said.
Naomi stood and walked to the wagon. “I have a few slices of milk cake here. It might sweeten Audra and Caleb’s disposition.” She brought the cake to the quilt.
“I know it’s delicious, but I’m quite full.” Audra sensed the mounting warmth reaching her neck and face and realized her friends could see her discomfort.
“I’ve had more than enough,” Caleb said. “If I stuff one more bite into this body, I’ll not be able to do a lick of work.”
Jed handed his plate to Naomi. “Pile it high, wife. Know what I think?”
Audra glanced his way, not sure if she wanted to hear Jed’s remark to his wife.
“Not sure, tell me,” Naomi said.
“I think these two bickering young people should take a walk and settle whatever’s ailing them.”
“I agree.” Naomi sliced a generous piece of the cake for Jed and then herself. “I can’t seem to figure out what’s wrong with those two. Any idea, Jed?”
He swallowed a mouthful. “Yep, I do. It’s—”
“Let’s go, Audra.” Caleb set his plate on the quilt.
Her heart fluttered against her chest like a hummingbird’s wings. Please, Jed. I’ll be humiliated. “I’m ready, as long as Naomi will wait until we get back to gather up the food.”
“Get on out of here. Jed and I have things to discuss.” Naomi waved them away like she was scattering feed to chickens.
Audra hurriedly joined Caleb before the Masterses spoke another word. They walked down a green hill toward a winding stream. As they ventured closer, the sound of the gurgling stream and the sight of little whitecaps offered the peace she desperately craved.
“What are we supposed to discuss?” Caleb’s tone conveyed his frustration.
“Our bickering.”
“Well, we wouldn’t be fussing if you’d listen to reason.
